What the game is

Double Board Variants are bomb pot and split-board poker games where players see two boards at once, then compete for board-specific high hands, ultimate high and low outcomes, or other room-defined split-pot formats.

Rules of Double Board Variants (Bomb Pots)

  • A bomb pot usually starts when every player who opts in puts the same required amount into the pot before normal betting begins. Because everyone contributes equally, there is no traditional preflop raise-and-call sequence.
  • Players are dealt their private cards for the chosen base game, such as PLO, five-card PLO, Big O, or another Omaha-style variant.
  • Two separate flops are dealt automatically before the first betting round. After the double-board flop is visible, play continues with betting rounds and later board cards according to the room's rules.
  • In PLO-style double board games, each player still uses exactly two private cards with exactly three cards from the board being evaluated. The two-card Omaha construction rule still matters on each board.
  • In Big O and other Hi/Lo double board games, high and low hands are evaluated under the chosen split-pot rules, including whether lows must qualify as eight-or-better.
  • Because double board games can use different payout structures, players should confirm whether the game is high-high, ultimate high and ultimate low, or another posted house format before interpreting results.

Example calculations

  • Enter A♠ K♠ Q♥ J♥ against 9♣ 8♣ 7♦ 6♦ with Board 1 showing K♦ T♠ 4♣ and Board 2 showing 8♥ 7♠ 2♣ to compare top-pair strength on one board against wrap and two-pair pressure on the other.
  • Study a double board PLO bomb pot where one board is paired and the other board is low and connected, because a hand that is strong on one board may be nearly dead on the other.
  • Compare Big O bomb pot hands like A♣ 2♦ K♣ Q♦ J♠ against A♥ 3♥ 4♠ 5♠ T♦ when one board creates a strong low draw and the other board favors high-card strength.

Strategy examples

  • In high-high double board games, sometimes labeled Ultimate High / Ultimate High, each board is usually its own high-hand contest. The best high hand on Board 1 wins one portion and the best high hand on Board 2 wins another portion.
  • In ultimate high and ultimate low formats, the game can award one high share to the best high hand available across the boards and one low share to the best qualifying low hand available across the boards.
  • Double board PLO rewards hands that can compete on both boards. A hand that is only strong on one board may be fighting for half the pot while risking heavy action from players freerolling the other board.
  • Double board Big O and other Hi/Lo bomb pots create extra scoop and quartering risk because players may have a strong high on one board, a low draw on another board, or both.
  • When calculator support is available, equity results will be useful for separating board-by-board equity, scoop potential, low qualification, and how turn or river cards change each board's winner.

Double Board Variants FAQs

What is a bomb pot?

A bomb pot is a hand where participating players put in an equal forced amount before the hand develops. Players receive their private cards, the flop is dealt automatically, and betting begins after the flop instead of before it.

What does high-high mean in double board games?

High-high usually means both boards are scored for high hands. One board can award one share of the pot and the other board can award another share, so a player may win one board, both boards, or neither board.

What are ultimate high and ultimate low variants?

Ultimate high and ultimate low formats compare the best high outcome and the best low outcome across the boards instead of simply treating both boards as separate high-only contests. House rules vary, so the exact payout structure should be confirmed before play.

Can double board bomb pots be played as PLO or Big O?

Yes. Double board bomb pots are commonly played with PLO-style private cards, five-card PLO, Big O, and other Omaha-family structures. The private-card usage rule for the base game still applies.
