What the game is

Omaha Hi/Lo is a split-pot Omaha game where the best high hand can split with the best qualifying eight-or-better low hand.

Rules of Omaha Hi/Lo

  • Each player starts with four private cards, also called hole cards, and five community cards can be dealt like Hold'em.
  • The high hand follows Omaha rules: exactly two private cards plus exactly three community cards.
  • The low hand is also built from exactly two private cards plus exactly three community cards, but those two private cards do not have to be the same two used for the high hand.
  • A low hand qualifies only if it has five different ranks that are eight or lower. Aces count as low, and straights or flushes do not hurt the low hand.
  • If no low qualifies, the best high hand wins the entire pot.

Example calculations

  • Enter A♣ 2♦ K♣ Q♦ against A♥ 3♥ 4♠ 5♠ on 8♣ 7♦ K♠ to study nut-low potential with high-hand backup.
  • Study whether a hand has scoop potential or is mostly playing for half the pot.
  • Add turn and river cards to see when low draws counterfeit.

Strategy examples

  • Prioritize scoop potential instead of chasing only half the pot.
  • Use calculations to understand counterfeit risk with weak low draws.
  • Compare nut-low plus high equity against one-way high hands.
